“I hear every goddamn word you say, you know,” she said through the wall.

“I know,” I said.

“Than quit it for Christ’s sake.  I can’t hear myself think in here.  Besides, the weight of it… it’s not fair.  I don’t even know you.”

“But who else is there?  Please, I…I need you is all”

“What does it even matter?” she said, “I’ve never said a word.  I can’t solve your problems; I won’t tell you what to do. I never meant to be nobody’s nothing.”

“That’s not your choice to make; the best of us are weighed down.  Please just keep listening—  the creaking of my floorboards is too much to take.  And your place… it’s too quiet for your own good.  You’re losing yourself, you know.”

“I know, I know, I know,” she whispered, “It shows.”
